Tobacco Cessation Clinic

THE CLINIC

A Tobacco Cessation Clinic is available at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. This Clinic provides individual counseling and personal follow-up for those who wish to stop smoking or stop using any form of tobacco.

Individuals may refer themselves to the Clinic or be referred by their dentist, dental hygienist, physician, nurse or other health care professional.

Tobacco use history, nicotine dependence, motivation, self-assessment questionnaires are sent to an individual before the first appointment.

Typically a tobacco user will require three or more sessions.

 

FIRST SESSION

Includes a comprehensive interview and assessment by a nicotine dependence counselor. During this session a quitting date will be set. Assessment of what type of pharmacologic therapy is determined.

SECOND SESSION

During this session behavioral modification intervention is done by a specialist in this field.

THIRD SESSION

A follow-up is carried out along with teeth cleaning and prophylaxis.

TREATMENT

The counselor will help the individual set up their own “customized” treatment plan. Possible options are discussed including:

• Behavioral modification strategies by a behavioral modification specialist including:
 

- Coping skills
- Individualized quitting techniques
- Support networks

• Monitored use of FDA-approved tobacco cessation pharmaceutical agents such as nicotine gum, patches, nasal spray, inhaler, Zyban or various combinations prescribed by a tobacco cessation counselor

• Oral health care including cleaning and removal of tobacco stains

FOLLOW-UP

The tobacco cessation clinic provides personal long-term follow-up. This may include phone calls, letters and additional counseling sessions.

The tobacco cessation clinic provides personal long-term follow-up. This may include phone calls, letters and additional counseling sessions.

FEES

Treatment is billed at $150.00, payable at first visit.
