1. The record base is centered over the face-bow fork and attached using sticky wax in four or more areas.  The face-bow fork and the record base and occlusion rim must be clean and dry for good adherence.  Place sticky wax on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the wax rim, not on the occlusal surface.  Remember not to place sticky wax on the midline and canine marks you have just made.

2. Place the maxillary base with the attached face-bow fork into the patient's mouth.

3. Instruct the patient to hold the maxillary record base in place with his or her fingers.

4. Assemble the face-bow apparatus following the manufacturer's instructions and make the face-bow transfer record.

Note: Always explain to the patient that you are going to use a caliper-like device for the procedure and that you will need his or her assistance.  Assure the patient that he or she will undergo no discomfort, but will feel a little pressure.  Tell the patient that it will only take a few minutes to complete the procedure.

Mounting the Maxillary Cast on the Articulator

1. Set the condylar housings of the upper member of the articulator at 25 degree. Place the  adjustable incisal guide table on the lower member of the articulator.

2. Attach the face-bow fork to the lower member of the articulator.  Tighten the lock , so that the face-bow is securely attached to the lower  member of the articulator.

3. Seat the maxillary cast (securely) in the face-bow fork record.  Make sure that some space exists between the mounting plate and the top of the cast when the upper member of the articulator is closed.  If no space exists, the base of the cast must be reduced.  Deepen your index grooves if the base of the master cast must be reduced to the extent that they are compromised.

6. Apply a small amount of Vaseline to the center of the base of the master cast to facilitate separation from the mounting later.

7. Make a mix of quick-setting mounting stone and attach the maxillary cast to the upper member of the articulator.  The mounting should be smoothed and neatly finished.

8. After the mounting stone has reached an initial set, the face-bow assembly is removed.  You are now to ready to evaluate the mandibular record base.  Try to make all changes on the mandibular record base and to leave the maxillary as your reference.

9. Disinfect the face-bow with the current approved surface disinfectant for metals.
