Patient Visit 5

USE OF PRESSURE-INDICATING MEDIUM

Procedure

1. Remove the PIP paste from jar with a tongue blade to avoid contaminating the entire jar with the brush.  Place on paper pad.

2. Dry the dentures thoroughly using 2X2 gauze sponges.

3. Paint a layer of paste over the entire tissue surface of both dentures using the brush provided

4. Place the dentures in the patient's mouth.  Have the patient close on two cotton rolls,  one on the right and one on the left for two minutes.

5. Remove the dentures from the patient's mouth.  Observe the areas on the tissue surface of the denture where the paste has been displaced by heavy contact with the tissue.

6. Relieve these areas judiciously.  Consult your clinical faculty member prior to relieving the denture.

7. Reapply the paste until the dentures contact the tissue surfaces evenly.

8. Remove the pressure indicating paste using an alcohol gauze when all tissue adjustments have been completed.

At the initial placement appointment, heavy pressure areas on the denture-bearing tissues are usually removed.  All pressure areas are not usually reduced.  At the 24 hour recall appointment, the patient's response to these areas is noted and they are further relieved at that time.  if indicated by the presence of erythema and/or discomfort.

After you have adjusted the tissue surfaces of the dentures so they are comfortable to the patient, your next procedures is the clinical remount and occlusal refinements.
