Research by Dentistry Professor and Alumnus Featured in May Issue of JADA

In 2009, College of Dentistry Professor John Kalmar and dentistry alumnus Dr. Michael P. Rethman joined a group of expert panelists for an oral cancer screening workshop sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Chosen from health-related organizations throughout the U.S., the workshop's group of medical experts, including Kalmar and Rethman, analyzed relevant data and examined the efficacy of an array of current oral cancer-related screening and treatment methods.

The results of that research have been featured in the May (2010) issue of the prestigious Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). A premier, peer-reviewed publication that presents the best and most significant research in dentistry, JADA’s articles feature research that has a significant impact on the practice of clinical dentistry, such as that conducted by Drs. Kalmar and Rethman.

In the JADA article titled, “Evidence-based clinical recommendations regarding screening for oral squamous cell carcinomas,” Kalmar, Rethman, and the other expert panelists address the potential benefits and risks of screening for oral squamous cell carcinomas and the use of various screening aids to visualize and detect potentially malignant and malignant oral lesions.

Dr. Michael Rethman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a former president of the American Academy of Periodontology. Currently practicing in Honolulu, Hawaii, Rethman received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University, and his certificate of periodontics from the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research in Washington, D.C.

Dr. John Kalmar is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology, and he is the Director of the Graduate Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. A Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Kalmar also serves on the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee for the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
