Dean Anderson Hosts Town Hall Meeting for Students

On July 29th, Dean Carole Anderson hosted a town hall meeting held specifically for students. The open forum began with the Dean’s updates on building renovations, the process for calibrating course grading throughout the College, and current options for increasing electronically-based learning opportunities for students.

The "question and answer" portion of the forum included discussions about increasing consistency in course grading, the importance of students' exit interviews, creating positive learning environments, as well as the College's strategic plan for enhancing educational programs.

Executive Committee Attends Culture Transformation Workshop

www.osu.edu/eminence

On July 26 and 27th, dentistry’s Executive Committee, which includes Dean Carole Anderson, division chairs, and other senior administrators, attended a two-day culture transformation retreat that is part of President E. Gordon Gee’s plan for Ohio State to move from its current position of institutional “excellence” to a new position of “eminence” as a national leader in education, research, and innovation.

One of the first culture transformation retreat participants, President Gee expressed his support for this initiative by making his own “touchstone of promise” statement that described the great changes and progress he envisions for Ohio State.

“Together, we must create a culture that values collaboration and rewards shared success,” Gee said. “We must think and act as an integrated and cohesive institution. We must nurture the best in ourselves and in one another. We must seek partners across the institution and outside of it, and we must act quickly when opportunities arise.”

Also called “unfreezing retreats,” the two-day interactive workshops engage participants in activities that foster a "high performance culture” at Ohio State. Participants learn ways to increase individual and organizational success, and they’re given tools for practicing these behaviors in their personal and professional lives.

Commenting on the value of the recent unfreezing retreat, Dean Carole Anderson said, “These culture transformation workshops that are part of the University’s plan to move from ‘excellence to eminence’ will support our own transition here in dentistry to a high performance culture that includes effective leadership, high levels of accountability, and a shared vision among the members of the College community.”

Music in the Courtyard Events Return!

The College of Dentistry's Music in the Courtyard series returned with three events this summer -- July 8, July 22, and August 19 -- for students, faculty, and staff.

Sponsored by the Sterilization Monitoring Service, the events offered a relaxing mid-day break that included DQ Dilly Bars, hot dogs, outdoor games, and music.

The Music in the Courtyard events were created by Professor of Clinical Dentistry and Director of Admissions Joen Iannucci. “We all strive to create goodwill and collegiality among our faculty, staff and students,” Iannucci says, “and we hope events like these will provide ongoing memorable and positive experiences.”

H.O.M.E. Coach Provides Dental Care for Local Children in Need

On July 13th, the College of Dentistry's mobile dental clinic, called the H.O.M.E. (Health Outreach Mobile Experience) Coach, joined the West Ohio Conference United Methodist Church in providing dental care for underserved children in the Columbus area.

Fifty-five children living in a mobile home park on the city's east side received dental treatment through the joint efforts of the United Methodist Church volunteers and the H.O.M.E. Coach staff.

Serving the local community since 2005, the H.O.M.E. Coach's mission is to provide access to dental care and treatment, which is the number one unmet health care need in Ohio. The mobile dental clinic is a component of the College's OHIO Project, which is a community outreach initiative that is managed by Dr. Canise Bean, an Associate Professor of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, and Director of the Office of Community Education.

Commenting on the recent trip to Columbus's east side community, Dr. Bean said, "The H.O.M.E. Coach regularly travels to elementary schools throughout Columbus, providing dental care and education for children locally, but the need for help is increasing, and we're expanding our efforts to meet that need."

With national levels of unemployment and poverty on the rise, Dr. Bean commented on the impact of this national trend. "When we visited this mobile home park, the conditions were deplorable and a real concern to us," Bean said. "We saw a dire need for increased services, and therefore made the decision to return to this location. Ultimately, 55 children benefited from this outreach effort."

As one of dentistry's most successful outreach programs, the H.O.M.E. Coach provides diagnostic and preventive care, restorative dentistry, digital radiography, and other dental services to more than 2100 children in Franklin County annually.

To learn more about this outreach project, call the Office of Community Education at 614-247-8064, or contact Levings.2@osu.edu.

Each student will receive a white coat and an official welcome to the College by Director of Admissions Joen Iannucci, College of Dentistry Dean Carole Anderson, and selected faculty representatives.

Dentistry Students Rally for "Hunger Hurts" Campaign

Dentistry's faculty, staff, and D2, D3, and D4 students joined together in July to kick off a fund-raising and food donation initiative that supported the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, which works with local businesses, schools, civic groups, and individuals to gather food and raise funds for individuals and families in need.

Students, faculty, and staff members gathered on July 10th to hand out flyers door-to-door in neighborhoods in Hilliard and Upper Arlington, inviting donations of canned foods, pasta meals, peanut butter, and other much-needed items for curb-side pickup the following Saturday.

With additional donations from Sam’s Club and Huffman’s Market, the "Hunger Hurts" campaign collected a total of 676 pounds of food for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
