Congratulations to the Classes of 2010!

The College of Dentistry’s Convocation Ceremony was held June 6th in the Mershon Auditorium on campus. The traditional ceremony honored the achievements of the dental hygiene and the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) classes of 2010.

This year’s event featured a convocation address by Eric Fingerhut, Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, who spoke about the opportunities afforded by the state's higher education programs, which include the professional dental programs offered by the College of Dentistry. Fingerhut's keynote address was followed by the traditional hooding ceremony for D.D.S. graduates, and the presentation of awards and honors to dental hygiene graduates.

College of Dentistry Dean Carole Anderson presented awards and certificates of honor to members of the classes of 2010, which included 102 D.D.S. graduates, 35 dental hygiene program graduates, and one Doctor of Philosophy in Oral Biology graduate.

In her farewell remarks, Dean Anderson said to the newly graduated students, “This is both an end and a new beginning for you. Your days as students are over, and you're embarking on new careers as dental professionals. As you move forward to achieve your personal and professional goals, you have my heartfelt wishes for a future that includes a wonderful life and a career that is both successful and rewarding!”

Veler Scholarship Winners Announced

The late Dr. Richard C.
Veler and his wife,
Mrs. Betty G. Veler

In the summer of 2009, the College of Dentistry received a gift of approximately $3 million to support scholarships for dentistry students. The largest single gift in the College’s history, the donation came from the estate of the late Dr. Richard C. Veler, a College of Dentistry alumnus, and his wife, Betty G. Veler, both of whom were lifelong supporters of the university.

As a result of the Velers' estate gift and the scholarships that were named in their honor, Dean Carole Anderson recently announced the first-ever recipients of the
Richard C. Veler, D.D.S., and Betty G. Veler Dental Scholarships. The following is Dean Anderson's message to the College:

Dear students, faculty, staff, and friends,

It is my privilege to announce that the first winners of the Richard C. Veler, D.D.S., and Betty G. Veler Dental Scholarships are Robert Haddad (class of 2011); Yirae Kang (class of 2012); and Joe Pittmann (class of 2013).

This group of students -- or Veler Scholars -- will receive full, renewable, in-state tuition throughout their time in the D.D.S. program as a result of their academic merit, their financial need, and their good character.

These scholarship recipients will be expected to continue in the Velers’ footsteps by engaging in a lifelong relationship with this College. That relationship will be demonstrated by giving back in ways that have a permanent impact on The Ohio State University, the College of Dentistry, and its students.

There were many deserving applications for these scholarships, and the final decisions were not easy. Throughout the selection process, the committee members were reminded that we have the most energetic, hard-working, involved, and intelligent student body on this or any other campus. Your accomplishments should be celebrated, and the challenges you have overcome to get here and succeed are humbling.

We thank all of the applicants for dedicating the time to submitting an application. I look forward to a day when we will be able to award more scholarships like these to the many deserving students in the College of Dentistry.

Please join me in congratulating these outstanding students, and in thanking them for their lifelong commitment to The Ohio State University and the College of Dentistry.

My best regards,
Carole Anderson
Dean, College of Dentistry
