Dental Hygiene Spring Banquet

On May 21st, the Dental Hygiene Class of 2010 hosted its annual dental hygiene spring banquet. The theme for this year's celebration was a “spring fling,” and the location was the new Ohio Union's Cartoon Room.

Senior students nominated dental hygiene faculty and staff members for fun awards that included the "best dressed" faculty and staff members. Others received awards that honored their efforts as instructors and mentors.

A slideshow featuring the graduating class and their experiences at the College of Dentistry added a final touch to the evening, which concluded with music and dancing -- and a great time that was had by all!

Dr. Harold McDaniel Wins Distinguished Alumni Award

Drs. Joe Crowley (left) and
Jacinto Beard (right) presented this year's award to Dr. Harold McDaniel.

The Dental Alumni Society honors a College of Dentistry alumnus each year with the Distinguished Alumni Award, which is presented at Post College Assembly. The award is given to alumni who demonstrate good character, and who have given outstanding service or other contributions to the College of Dentistry, to the fields of art and science, or to organized dentistry.

This year's award winner was Dr. Harold McDaniel, a graduate of the class of 1958 whose many accomplishments include developing the Franklin Park Medical Center, which was one of the first minority-owned businesses in Columbus. He has also served as an advisor for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, where he created policy guidelines for the Ohio Dental Medicaid Program.

A loyal alumnus, Dr. McDaniel has made generous contributions to Ohio State and the College of Dentistry. The two scholarship funds he created -- one for the College of Biological Sciences, and the other for the College of Dentistry -- give financial help annually to deserving students.

The College of Dentistry congratulates Dr. McDaniel for his lifetime of service in dentistry, and for being an accomplished and inspirational alumnus, colleague, and friend.
