policy on certain accommodations with regard to preclinic laboratory
examinations: History - In 2003 Dean DeVore and
Dr. Jordan met with the course
directors of the preclinical laboratory (in 2003) and discussed each
course and how a request for accommodations - generally distraction
free and extended time - might be handled in each and every course.
Each course director at that time address the issues for their
particular assigned course. The consensus at that meeting was
in general the following:
"Time may be extended for
those examinations which are not deemed to
be "time sensitive" in that the intent of the exam is not to test the
student on their ability to perform a procedure -
so within a given time period that
directly relates to providing care to the patient in a clinical
setting. If the intent of the exam is to test the student's ability
to perform the requisite procedure within a designated time frame that
corresponds to the delivery of care in the clinical setting,
then extended time will not be permitted. Faculty indicate that
as a point of reference, the time designated for these exams is based
on a maximum time period that would be acceptable for the delivery of
the designated procedure clinically. Students requesting a
distraction free environment will be accommodate to "reduce
distraction" by allowing the student to be seated in a different
location in the land and/or wearing headphones to help reduce
extraneous noise. It was determined that there isn't
an alternate location that is acceptable for these types
of examinations other than the preclinical laboratory and therefore
the faculty can only offer a reduced distraction and not a distraction
free environment."
