Dr. Ana Mercado joined the OSU Section of
Orthodontics in April 2002. She is a 1992 graduate from the
University of Puerto Rico School of Dentistry. After receiving
her DMD degree, she came to OSU and completed a General Practice
Residency in June 1993.
Dr. Mercado continued her career at The Ohio State University
earning a Masters degree in Oral Biology in 1995. Her research
project was titled "Effect of psychosocial stress on whole blood
Interleukin-1 beta mRNA expression." This work was published in
the Lancet journal.
In 1995, Dr. Mercado received the NIDCR Dentist Scientist Award
for the development of her research career and clinical training
in the fields of Orthodontics. In 1998, she completed the
Orthodontic residency. In 2001, Dr. Mercado completed her PhD in
Oral Biology with a dissertation titled "Altered gene expression
of Interleukin-1 alpha, Interleukin-1 beta, and Keratinocyte
growth factor-1 in early cutaneous wounds of restrained mice."
This work has been published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and
Immunity and the Journal of Neuroimmunology.
Dr. Mercado is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the
Division of Orthodontics. She is also part of the medical staff
of Children's Hospital Dental Clinic, where she supervises and
coordinates orthodontic care to patients with craniofacial

of clinical outcome measures in the dental care of patients with
