Faculty

Dr. Zongyang Sun
• Associate Professor, DDS, MS, MSD,PhD

Dr. Zongyang Sun received his dental degree in 1996 and an MS in Oral Anatomy and Physiology in 1999 from West China University of Medical Sciences, Chengdu, China; he then obtained an MSD in Orthodontics and a PhD in Oral Biology in 2007 from University of Washington, Seattle. In 2008, he joined the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Dentistry and became an assistant professor in the Division of Orthodontics.

Dr. Sun’s general research interest is craniofacial skeletal growth, repair and regeneration. His present research areas include:

- Mechanical, cellular and molecular changes of alveolar bone following tooth extraction
- Craniofacial repair and regeneration using bone marrow stromal cells
- Characterization of mandibular periosteum
- Palatal expansion and circumaxillary suture strains
- Factors affecting the accuracy of alveolar bone measurements from CBCT images.

His research is currently supported by NIH/NIDCR, American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, Delta Dental and OSU College of Dentistry. Dr. Sun is a board certified orthodontist and he practices in the college faculty practice and in the Children’s Hospital evening clinic.  He is involved in didactic and clinical teaching for dental students and orthodontic residents. He also serves as an active reviewer for American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and a graduate faculty in the Division of Oral Biology at OSU. Email:  sun.254@osu.edu.
