Residents and Faculty Advocate for Patients and Training Programs

Pediatric dentistry residents and faculty participated in the AAPD's Annual Congressional Lobby Days in Washington DC, March 7, 8 and 9th. The highlight of this trip includes sessions with each resident's home state Congressional or Senate office. These visits provide the opportunity to educate and advise legislators and staff members on pertinent issues in pediatric dentistry. Additional events included training sessions on legislative advocacy, collaboration with fellow AAPD members from around the United States, and sightseeing throughout the District. Program Chosen for ODAF Grant

The Ohio Dental Association Foundation recently identified the Early Childhood Caries Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital as a recipient of a grant totaling $5000. The award will be used towards furthering the program's goal of improving oral health outcomes in the low-income children through caregiver education and empowerment. Since 2000, the ODA Foundation Grant and Scholarship Program has awarded over $500,000 to dental students and hospital-based dental programs throughout Ohio.

Half of this particular grant was funded through the Don Bowers Fund. Now retired, Dr. Don Bowers was a member of the OSU College of Dentistry faculty for nearly four decades; he is a resident of Upper Arlington, Ohio. As a pediatric dentist and educator, Dr. Bowers was actively involved with the major pediatric dental organizations in the U.S., and was instrumental to the development of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Early Childhood Caries Program is led by Dr. Homa Amini and Mrs. Beth Noel, RDH. The clinical portion of the program also benefits from efforts of Ohio State University Pediatric dental residents.
