Dentist and Staff Contribute to ODH Report

Dr. Homa Amini, Sheryl Allison, RDH, and NCH Dental Program Manager, Tim Rumfeld, contributed to a report published by the Ohio Department of Health. Hills and Valleys: The Challenge of Improving Oral Health in Appalachian Ohio 2012 is a comprehensive look at the barriers to care and burden of disease experienced by Appalachian Ohioans.  A link to the complete report can be found here.

Followell Named Director of Dentistry at Nisonger Center Dentistry Services

Dr. Timothy Followell is the new Dental Director at The Ohio State University’s Nisonger Center. Dr. Followell will lead the Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) Dental Program. This program provides a complete range of oral health services to children and adults with developmental disabilities and other special needs. The Nisonger Center dental program is the largest provider of oral health services for adults with developmental disabilities in Franklin County.

Dr. Followell completed his fellowship and residency at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Casamassimo Installed as ODA President-Elect

Dr. Paul Casamassimo, Chief of Dentistry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Chair of the Division of  Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health, was recently installed as President-Elect of the Ohio Dental Association.  The Ohio Dental Association has been informing, representing, and serving the dental profession since 1866. As past Vice President of the ODA, Past President of the AAPD, and current director of the AAPD's Policy Institute, Dr. Casamassimo's leadership efforts and participation in organized dentistry have impacted general and Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health for generations to come.

GKAS Day a Success!

Spearheaded by the efforts of Dr. Elizabeth Gosnell, Director of Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health , the College of Dentistry recently provided over $15,000 of free care to over 100 needy children and adolescents from the Columbus area in conjunction with the ADA's Give Kids A Smile Program. GKAS is an nationwide event sponsored by the American Dental Association which aims to provide free dental care to underserved children. Dr. Gosnell was also successful in obtaining a $4000 grant from the Ohio Dental Association for GKAS purposes. GKAS 2013 will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013.

McTigue Receives Ohio Dental Association Award

Dr. Dennis McTigue, faculty within the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health was recently awarded the ODA Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to children's oral health and to the education of fellow dentists. With over 40 years of service to the dental community, Dr. McTigue's career spans the local, state and national level. He is a past Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health at the Ohio State University and has served as a past president of multiple national dental organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health , the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health , and the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped.

A world-renowned expert in dental traumatology, Dr. McTigue teaches Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health at both the predoctoral and graduate levels and maintains a private faculty practice at the Ohio State College of Dentistry.

Amini Receives Grant

Dr. Homa Amini was recently awarded at $9000 grant from the Ohio Dental Association for her project entitled,  Educating the future dental workforce while improving access to dental care for low-income pregnant teens.

2012 AAPD Annual Session Highlights

The 2012 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health Annual Session recently took place in San Diego, California. Once again, residents, alumni and faculty of the NCH/OSU Pediatric Dental program were well represented. Alumna Dr. Erin Gross won the prestigious Ralph E. McDonald Award. This honor  is given annually to the resident judged to have accomplished the most outstanding research project based on an abstract, manuscript, and oral presentation.

PGY2 resident Rosalyn Sulyanto was selected as one of the three recipients of the highly-competitive 3M ESPE Preventive Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Dr. Sulyanto receives a one-year stipend of up to $7500 to support her project with research mentor Dr. Ann Griffen.

Not to be outdone, program chair Dr. Paul Casamassimo was chosen as Pediatric Dentist of the Year, and faculty member Dr. Dennis McTigue was recognized for completing his term as the President of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health
Lastly, residents presented their insightful research outcomes and thoughtful case reports at poster sessions throughout the weekend. Recent graduate Maria Cordero presented at the highly competitive String of Pearls lecture series to compliment many multiple faculty presentations.


2012 ODA Leadership Institute: PGY1 pediatric dental residents attended the 2012 ODA Leadership Institute at the Easton Hilton in Columbus, Ohio, May 18-19.This two-day seminar, open to all ODA member dentists, featured a variety of events geared towards furthering leadership in organized state dentistry. The NCH residents learned about pertinent legislative issues and participated in a discussion of the health care reform law, which included potential impacts on the law secondary to the upcoming Supreme Court ruling. The Institute concluded with group participation in an ODA Executive Committee Town Hall meeting and a Deans' Roundtable, which featured lively discussion amongst the deans of Ohio's three dental schools.

Dr. Homa Amini serves on the Ohio Department of Health’s  Director’s Taskforce on Access to Care

Dr. Homa Amini served with a number of other state leaders in dentistry, public health, advocacy and education in the most recent task force looking at ways to address access issues in Ohio related to oral health. This process involved many meetings around the state to gain input from stakeholders in this issue. Leading the effort was another of the Division’s part-time faculty, Dr. Mark Siegal, who is the Chief Dental Officer of the State of Ohio. The report can be accessed here.
