Resident Receives Accolade
Richard Baxter, PGY2 within the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health, was recently awarded the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health Resident Recognition Award. This award recognizes pediatric dental residents doing innovative and interesting activities in the fields of clinical dentistry, research, teaching/education, and community/public service. In February of 2013, Dr. Baxter helped train eleven community health workers in Southeast Asia to provide basic dental care to people in remote villages who would otherwise have no access to dental care. With the rest of the dental and support team, Dr. Baxter provided education to the trainees on how to provide safe injections, sterilize instruments, and carefully extract teeth for patients who have never seen a dentist before. Dr. Baxter also demonstrated how to effectively care for children using behavior management techniques like distraction and tell-show-do and taught trainees the knee-to-knee position for treating children. The team also provided instruction on basic preventive measures such as brushing, flossing, and avoiding sugar-filled candy and drinks. The trainees are now able to utilize their skills, knowledge, and instruments provided in more remote areas of their homeland in the care of the poor and needy.
